Our history

1928

Year of foundation

Fa. A. v/d Grijp is established as a company specialising in the rental and sale of houseboats and deck barges. The vessels are built and repaired in-house in Sliedrecht.

1945

The beginning of a new enterprise

After the war, little remains of the fleet. The few vessels that can still be traced are either badly damaged or lying on the riverbed. Fa. v/d Grijp decides to salvage and repair its own vessels, attracting the attention of the Dutch State. Soon afterwards, the company is also commissioned to salvage other vessels. This new direction quickly makes the site in Sliedrecht too small, and relocation to larger premises becomes necessary.

1952

Room for growth

In the early 1950s, Fa. v/d Grijp purchases several plots of willow coppice and reed land. On a site covering more than six hectares, the company develops its own work harbour and raises part of the land for the construction of a new 1,000 m² factory hall on the border between Sliedrecht and Giessendam.

1953

N.V. Shipyard & Machine Factory formerly A. van de Grijp

With the new factory comes a new company. The business officially changes its name and focuses primarily on the construction and repair of dredging equipment. At the new location, 15 vessels are built and, later on, kilometres of discharge pipes are manufactured.

1960

Building for progress

In the early 1960s, several additional factory halls are built and the company adopts submerged arc welding. These developments help accelerate modernisation and give innovation a permanent place within the company.

1970

Another new location

In August 1970, the company moves to another, even larger site, this time in Papendrecht. A new pipe warehouse and several houses are built first. In 1971, a shipbuilding hall follows, which still serves as a construction hall today.

1988

Revolutionary development

VandeGrijp has always been at the forefront of knowledge and technology. This is demonstrated by the construction of the most compact pipe factory in the world at our current location, directly next to the construction hall.

2012

Launch of the 500 m³ series

Two newly designed split hopper barges, each with a hopper capacity of 516 m³, are built at a shipyard in Poland. The G 501 and G 502 are the first vessels from the 500 m³ series to enter service. This size proves to offer the ideal balance between dimensions and capacity, making the barges suitable for both river and offshore operations.

2015

Expansion of the 500 m³ series

In 2014 and 2015, several split hopper barges are built in the Netherlands on behalf of VandeGrijp. The first are two smaller 363 m³ split hopper barges, followed by two further vessels from the 500 m³ series: the G 503 and G 504.

2017

Scaling up the fleet

To meet market demand, two larger split hopper barges are added to the fleet. This 900 m³ split hopper barge series is designed in-house and built in the Netherlands. The pipeline rental range is also expanded, with larger-diameter pipes of up to 1,000 mm becoming available.

2023

Expansion of machinery

A new dent-removal machine and flange straightener are installed, doubling maintenance capacity.

2024

Warehouse & pipe bridge

In 2024, our warehouse is fitted with new façade cladding, giving it a modern appearance.

In addition, a special pipe bridge is designed and delivered for the Hoofddorp project.

2025

Ready for the Future

Investment in equipment and yard facilities continues, further improving the quality of our service. Various tools are replaced or upgraded, and a new, heavier electric forklift is introduced at the yard. We are also taking important steps in IT, with the launch of a new website and the inclusion of rental items in a 3D Revit library. VandeGrijp Rental is ready for the future.
